Palacios Martínez, Julio (1891 - 1970)

Spanish physicist and mathematician.

He studied in the Faculty of Zaragoza and continued his degree in Physical Sciences at the University of Barcelona, he made a PhD in physics at the University of Madrid and then he moved to the University of Leiden. During the period 1916-1918, in Leiden, he investigated about the neon isotherms and other noble gases at low temperatures.
On his return to Spain, Julio Palacios joined to the Physical Research Laboratory, directed by Blas Cabrera, who worked on the formation of the mercury meniscus and its application to the correction of barometric columns reading. Palacios Martínez also investigated the theory of light channels rays, and he published a paper about it in the Annalen der Physik (1924) and worked with Blas Cabrera studying the diamagnetic and paramagnetic substances. In 1926 he became professor of Thermology at the University of Madrid. In 1929, at the Physical Research Laboratory facilities, Julio Palacios installed the first assembly to start his works on crystal structures through X-ray diffraction according to the Deby-Scherrer method.
After the Civil War, Julio Palacios abandoned his structural investigations and became interested in biological issues from a physics perspective. Appointed Director of the Physics section of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Lisbon. From this time the intellectual activity of Palacios Martínez covered several themes: the dynamics of a free-body rotation, electrolytic phenomena, a physical interpretation of night myopia, a series of studies on ultrasound and therapeutic use dimensional analysis.
In the last stage of his life, Julio Palacios dedicated his efforts to develop a theory of relativity critique, trying to rehabilitate the classical notions of absolute space and time. This was, probably, the most contentious aspect of its activity as a physicist. In addition to his research articles, Palacios Martinez published numerous books, with a clear didactic intention.
