The pickup is designed as an an nu lar glass tube 1 containing
mercury. Sealed in the tube is p la tin um wire 2. A part of this
wire, depending upon the angular displacement, is immersed
in mercury, i.e. short-circuited. The resistance of the pickup
varies w ith a change in the angular position of tube 1.
