They are also connected by turning pairs to lever 1 which turns about fixed axis E. When force P is applied to lever 1, motion is transmitted through links 5 and 4 to shoes a and b mounted on levers 2 and 3. Shoes a and b are pressed against the rim of rotating pulley 6, thereby braking the pulley.
