Carrier 1, with handle a, rotates about fixed axis A-A and is connected by a turning pair to planet gears 2 and 4 which are rigidly attached together. Gear 2 meshes with fixed sun gear 3 and gear 4 meshes with gear 5 which rotates about axis A-A. Gear 5 and hand b are keyed to shaft d.The gears have the following numbers of teeth: z₂=z₅=20 and z₄=z₃=19. Then the transmission ratio is i₅₁=1-(z₄z₃)/(z₅z₂)=1-(19×19)/(20×20)=39/400≅1/10. Thus hand b makes one revolution for every ten revolutions of carrier 1. The angle of rotation of hand b can be read off on dial c.
