SELF-ACTING FRICTION CAM BRAKE MECHANISM OF A HOISTING DRUM

Click to enlargeClick to enlarge Description

Brake disk 2 rotates about fixed axis A and is rigidly attached to drum b about which flexible link c is wound in hoisting load d. Braking cam 1 turns about fixed axis B and has a working surface along a circular arc described from point 0 which lies on normal AC. The load is hoisted by rotating the disk and drum counterclockwise. Reverse rotation of disk 2 and the drum (and dropping of the load) is prevented by cam 1 which jams disk 2 if angle γ has been properly chosen. Flat spring 3 holds cam 1 in contact with disk 2.
