FRICTION TOROIDAL COAXIAL INFINITELY VARIABLE DRIVE MECHANISM

Click to enlargeClick to enlarge Description

Toroidal friction wheel a is keyed to shaft 1 and rotates about fixed axis A. Toroidal friction wheel b is keyed to shaft 3 and rotates about fixed axis B. Shafts 1 and 3 are coaxial. Rollers 2 are in contact with wheels a and b and rotate about axes E. The planes of rollers 2 make equal angles φ with axes A and B. Rollers 2 can be set to various angles by swivelling them about axes C, which are perpendicular to the plane of the drawing, with the aid of identical gear segments 4. The transmission ratio from shaft 1 to shaft 3 is i₁₃=ω₁/ω₃=n₁/n₃=(d-r₂*sin(φ))/(d+r₂*sin(φ)) where ω₁, ω₃, n₁ and n₃ are the angular velocities and speeds (in rpm) of shafts 1 and 3, d is the distance between axis C and axes A and B, and r₂ is the radius of roller 2.
