Portrait of Archimedes, a scientist with many interests and, who only from necessity, applied himself as military engineer to the defence of Syracuse; this caused great damage to the Romans. In the field of engineering the most famous inventions by him, or ascribed to him, are the Archimedes’ screw, the burning mirrors, the iron hand, the giant ballistae.
