Drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, the cannon of Archimedes who was a scientist with many interests and, only from necessity, applied himself as military engineer to the defence of Syracuse; this caused great damage to the Romans. In the field of engineering the most famous inventions by him, or ascribed to him, are the Archimedes’ screw, the burning mirrors, the iron hand, the giant ballistae.
