Structure of mechanism |
Function |
This device is composed of a glass disc featuring different coloured bands (red, orange, yellow, blue...) representing the colours of the visible spectrum. These bands have areas which are proportional to those which they have in the spectrum, and are present in the same order. The disc moves on an axle, fixed to a wooden base by three small hooks. A string passes around the central axis of the circle, as well as around a wooden crank, which is also screwed to the base close to the glass disc. |

Application |
Examples of application |
When the crank is turned, the string turns the disc with its multi-coloured bands. This enables the demonstration of the composition of white light from its component spectrum colours. The device was used by future teachers during their studies at the men’s and women’s teacher training colleges, now the IUFM (University Teacher Training Institute) in Clermont-Ferrand. |
