Structure of mechanism

Function This apparatus comprises a rectangular metal frame fixed via a rod to a metal tripod. It is possible to adjust the verticality of the frame using 2 screws located on the tripod. Inside the rectangular frame there is a circular plate featuring six concentric circles and five lines drawn from the centre to the edge. There are holes for attaching pegs, located at the intersections between the lines and the concentric circles. These pegs have wires attached to them, from which weights can be suspended. It is also possible to attach protractors to the pegs, and pulleys can be fixed to the metal frame in order to deviate the wires holding the weights.
A rule with a scale from 0 at the centre to 12 is fixed under the plate in the metal frame.

Application

Examples of application This device is used to study the moments of a force. It was used by future teachers during their studies at the men’s and women’s teacher training colleges, now the IUFM (University Teacher Training Institute) in Clermont-Ferrand.
