Structure of mechanism

Function The stroboscope comprises a housing containing a disc (with 4 apertures) driven by a motor. The housing is closed by two half-lids made of a granular-finish grey metal. Springs at the front and the rear hold them together.
The motor (red coil = transformer) and an orange coil are powered via black and red connectors. The orange coil is used to brake the disc as it moves through the air gap. The braking effort can also be adjusted by turning a knob on the top of the device. It’s effect is to vary the position of the air gap with respect to the disc.

Application

Examples of application The stroboscope produces an alternation of light and dark phases, and is used to observe periodic movements and measure the frequency of the phenomena. The device was used by future teachers during their practical classes at the men’s and women’s teacher training colleges of Aurillac (Cantal), now the IUFM (University Teacher Training Institute).
