Structure of mechanism

Function This is a disc on which sections corresponding to the white light spectrum have been painted. The area of each colour is proportional to the fraction of the spectrum which it represents. The disc rests on a rotating stand whose base is a metal tripod. When the disc is turned rapidly, it appears to be white.

Application

Examples of application The Newton disc enables white light to be recomposed from its constituent coloured elements. The phenomenon operates thanks to retinal persistence (superimposition of images). The device was used by future teachers during their practical classes at the men’s and women’s teacher training colleges of Aurillac (Cantal), now the IUFM (University Teacher Training Institute).
