Railroad Car Coupling according to Eichholz (1874)

Structure of mechanism

Function The machinist Eichholz developed in 1874 a coupling for railroad cars.
The advantage of the invention over conventional couplings is that the operator does not have to occur between the railroad cars.
For coupling the towing hook of the first car is retracted by a crank in the direction of the second car.
Then the coupling eye which is mounted on a joint of the second car is placed by means of a lever over the towing hook of the first car. Then the towing hook retracted again until the buffer springs of both cars are compressed.
The decoupling is done in reverse way.
