Arthemon of Clazomenae (449 BC - 449 BC)

Mechanical military engineer

Artemon of Clazomenae was an ancient mechanical military engineer. He is mentioned by Pliny who affirms he was from Clazomenae and ascribes to him the invention of the testudo only. Servius, a Roman grammarian of the IV Century b.C., ascribes to Athenaeus also the invention of the battering ram. Athenaeus is also cited by Ephoros, a IV Century b.C. Greek historian and from Diodorus Siculus. Plutarch, on the other hand, believed that Athenaeus was previous to Pericles.
