Project description

The Digital Mechanism and Gear Library (short: DMG-Lib) is an Research Information Centre. The goal of this project is the

  • collection
  • preservation
  • systematization and
  • representation of information and knowledge about mechanisms and machines

An extensive and ever increasing collection of information on mechanism and machine science is available on the Internet portal of the DMG-Lib. You can do systematic search for structures of gears, guidance requirements or transfer function requirements or browse through the digital library by using various sorting criteria.

Variety of Heterogeneous Information Sources

The DMG-Lib places a variety of different information sources for mechanism and machine science at your disposal, for instance:

  • Technical books
  • Journal articles
  • Research reports
  • Gear catalogues
  • Functional models
  • Interactive animations
  • Instructional material
  • Movies, pictures, slides
  • Software tools

The heterogeneous information sources are published as digital documents on the Internet portal of DMG-Lib. Employing innovative technologies the sources' presentation is improved and more than just a digital reproduction. DigitisationPLUS includes enhancement and cross-linking of sources:

  • Digitisation of heterogeneous information sources
  • Clarification of copyrights
  • Providing additional information
  • Interactive animation of selected images, e. g. in books
  • Cross-linking of contents
  • Integration in semantic networks

User group

  • Lecturers
  • Students
  • Design Engineers in research and development
  • Historians searching for information about well-known engineers in the domain of mechanism and machine science
  • All people interested in the domain of engineering technology

The DMG-Lib is an international unique digital library containing comprehensive knowledge of both historical and modern sources and is based on innovative concepts for interaction, research and analysis. The DMG-Lib aims to give new impetus to the development of future digital libraries.

The continuity of the DMG-Lib is ensured through the society “Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Digitalen Mechanismen und Getriebebibliothek e. V.” (Association for supporting the digital mechanism and gear library). The purpose of this society is the promotion of science, research and education within the domain of mechanism and machine science. Members of the DMG-Lib e. V. can be individuals, companies, associations and corporations.
