Abstract Das Hauptwerk von Poisson basiert auf seinen Vorlesungen an der "Ecole Polytechnique". In außergewöhnlich klarer und eindringlicher Weise formalisiert er hier seine Ansicht der Mechanik von festen Körpern, Flüssigkeiten, Gasen, der Elastizität und der molekularen Anziehung. Der erste Band beschäftigt sich vornehmlich mit der Statik und Dynamik von "Materiepunkten". Der zweite Band geht zu einer generellen Theorie der Mechanik über.
