Numismatist, French archaeologist and inventor of the word "helicopter."
Among his deep research on particular in studies of Merovingian coins delivered to the Historical and Archaeological Society of Maine where he was a member. Friend of Félix Nadar and Jules Verne, he was a key precursor to all. Scholar, having studied mathematics, Sanskrit, old Greek and Latin, he holds the Legion of Honor. The word "helicopter" was invented by Gustave de Ponton d'Amécourt, from Greek Helikos (helix) and pteron (wing). This inventor built with Gabriel de La Landelle a small steam boiler engine prototype of an helicopter which was one of the first using aluminum. Jules Verne could consult a booklet published in 1863, in which Gustave Amécourt described his invention, and was inspired partly to describe the conquérant Robur helicopter. The expensive propeller, developed by Gustave de Ponton d'Amécourt and photographed by Nadar in 1863 helps to solve the problems of air navigation. A memorial stone was erected in the park of the town of Trilport where he was Mayor.
