Alberto Santos Dumont was an engineer and scientist, but mainly known as the aviation pioneer. He was born on July 20th in 1873 in the village of Cabangu, nowdays named as “Santos-Dumont”, Brazil. He designed and built several balloons and the first dirigible airship, with which he won the “Deutsch Prize” making a controlled flight around the Eiffel Tower. Later on, he developed a Heavier-Than-Air machine capable of taking off by its own means, an airplane with which he won the “Prize Archdeacor” on October 23th in 1906, flying a distance of 220 meters. For many contemporaries Santos-Dumont was the father of modern aviation and the first to achieve a ratified and controlled flight (Take off-Flight-Landing) using a completely autonomous airplane. Alberto Santos Dumont felt sick and depressed, possibly of sclerosis multiple which drove him to suicide on 23th July in 1932 in Brazil.
