Founder of the Silk Factories of St. Leucio; Statesman of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
Bernardo Tanucci was a statesman of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies of Tuscan origin. He arrived at Naples in the train of first King of the dynasty of the Borbone of Naples: King Carlo di Borbone. As statesman he affirmed the superiority of the Laical State on the Church and worked to abolish the privileges of the nobles and of the clergy. As far as this last aspect, he established an agreement with the Papacy.
Probably his most important doing was the foundation of the Reale Fabbrica della Seta di San Leucio (Royal Silk Factories of St. Leucio). The latter not only produced silk fabrics among the best in the world but represented also an important and futuristic experiment in the field of the welfare. At San leucio, in fact, the workers had a number of partuculer benefits that should be then extended to the rest of the Kingdom. In the silk factories was founded the first obligatory and cost-free school in Italy, for males and females, for the workers and their relatives; the working hours were 11 while in the rest of Europe they were still 14; to each worker was given an apartment having running water and toilet facilities; at San Leucio the first First cost-free medical care system in the wold; the female workers received a dowry from the King so the could marry who the liked best.
