Englischer Rechtsanwalt und Hobbymathematiker
Kempe verdiente seinen Lebensunterhalt hauptsächlich als Rechtsanwalt, mit Mathematik beschäftigte er sich in seiner Freizeit. Angeregt durch Sylvester stieß er dabei auch auf das damals aktuelle Problem der Geradführung, das ihn schließlich so faszinierte, dass er diverse kinematische Ketten ohne praktischen Nutzen erfand und das grassierende "kinematische Fieber" im Umfeld von Reuleaux noch verstärkte. Schließlich gelang ihm der Beweis, dass jede ebene Kurve n-ten Grades durch einen Mechanismus beschrieben werden kann. Kempe beschäftigte sich auch mit dem Vierfarben-Problem.
