Items

What kinds of items are possible in case of biographies?
By Rike Brecht, 31.05.2011

1 – in category person
Metadata (vita of Reuleaux) + image (showing Reuleaux)= 1 item in category person
Example: Biographie of Reuleaux
=> metadata (vita) + image + some of the literature is digitised [see also 2 & 3]

Metadata (vita of Arago) + image (showing Arago)= 1 item in category person
Example: Biographie of Arago
=> metadata (vita) + image but no digitised literature

Metadata (vita of Cranz)= 0 item in category person
because we didn’t digitise anything
Example: Biographie of Cranz
=> no image, no literature => no item

2 – in category image
Metadata (image e.g. type, description, date) + image (showing Reuleaux)= 1 item in category image
=> in the next month there will be a new browse category in DMG-Lib called images

3 – in category literature
Metadata (literature, e.g. from or about a person) + digitised work = 1 item in category literature
Example: Der Constructeur by Franz Reuleaux

Clarification of rights

Copyright law: Which right is applied?
By Birgit Tolkemit,10.05.2011
Apply the German Copyright Act (UrhG) because the DMG-Lib server is pursued in Germany. The UrhG is valid for all works of German citizens and citizens of other member states of the EU. Besides, it does not matter whether and where the works have appeared.

Which rights have the authors of their published works?
By Birgit Tolkemit,10.05.2011
The authors have many rights of published works. This concerns mainly journal articles but also research and conference reports. In § 38 paragraph 1 Copyright Act (UrhG) states:
“However, the author may otherwise reproduce and distribute the work on expiry of one year from the date of release, unless otherwise agreed.”
This rule is not mandatory, i.e. publishers can also make different agreements. But as a rule, the publisher has in the first year the exclusive right to use and then only a non-exclusive right of use is granted.

Are we able to use the secondary publication rights for journal article, research reports and conference reports?
By Birgit Tolkemit,10.05.2011
Yes, we can, but we need a letter of agreement from every author and co-author. In the case that the author agrees in with the DMG-Lib letter of agreement and there is no further agreement with the publisher we must keep only to the embargo term of one year.
In general, after one year the authors have again the right to decide on the further use of their works. But the authors should be familiar with their publishing contracts. The DMG-Lib. e. V. can’t know these contracts. By signing the letter of agreement provided by the DMG-Lib. e. V., the author confirms to have the right on these documents and that no rights of third persons are breached with the publication.

Why scanning blank pages? Can these pages be removed?
By Veit Henkel,15.04.2011

Scanning all pages also the blank pages as well as the fold-out pages in the fold-in state is important to find out mistakes in the page order caused by the operator during the workflow process. This is the only way to check the order in the PDF result without having the original book in your hands.

For the user in our portal it is uncomfortable to load leading blank pages at the beginning or at the end of a book as well as the fold-in state of the fold-out pages. So you can remove these pages in the ScanTailor out folder after you have merged these pages with the ScanTailor processed fold-out pages in the fold-out state. Blank pages between the first and the last “content pages” should not be removed in normal cases.

If you already remove these pages in “Step 2 – Split Pages” in your ScanTailor software, you have no control if you have inserted the special pages in the correct order. With the Windows Explorer thumbnail preview or the thumbnail function in IrfanView (press T-key) software you can check the correct order and you can remove the redundant blank pages and the pages in the fold-in state.

Please remove pages before you start the Abbyy FineReader software. Please do not remove pages from the generated PDF file because saving from Adobe Acrobat software can cause compression of the page images depending on many settings in the Acrobat software! This can destroy all your valuable work.

In our data base we can define the preview page, which is showing as thumbnail in the portal. This enable a thumbnail with an informative content often the title page.

Why using a separate ScanTaylor project for special pages e.g. fold-out pages?
By Veit Henkel,15.04.2011

From my experiences, different page sizes in one ScanTailor project are possible but need many corrections by hand. That is why I recommend a separate ScanTailor process for the fold-out pages. In the ScanTailor project for these special pages you walk through step 1 to 6 like for the normal pages and you should save your work as a separate ScanTailor project in the folder ~\application_data\scantailor. You can name it e.g. “011036009a.ScanTailor” (add an “a” at the dmg id)

What happens with the processed special pages like fold-out pages after merging? Can I use a separate folder for merging process?
By Veit Henkel,15.04.2011

You should merge the ScanTailor output in the out folder of your main ScanTailor project in the folder ~\scans\out. From the archiving point of view it is useful to have all ScanTailor processed pages in the correct order in one folder. If you use for merging temporarily a separate folder, e.g. on your desktop, you must ensure that you move it into the folder structure which is used for uploading.  So it seems to be better to merge directly into the main ScanTailor folder. Please observe that the naming of the files leading at the end to the correct page order and that no files have the same name to avoid conflicts while merging.

The files in the ~\special_pages folder can be removed after merging process because there are now in the folder ~\scans\out. But please observe that you have saved the ScanTailor project file of these special pages.
