Englischer Mathematiker; Vertreter der Geradführung
Sylvester machte sich um die mathematische Beschreibung der Eigenschaften kinematischer Ketten verdient. Als Vertreter der Theorien der Geradführung war er von dem von Peaucellier erfundenen Mechanismus fasziniert, den er in England bekannt machte. Er nutze diesen, um daraus Mechanismen zur Lösung von quadratischen und kubischen Wurzeln abzuleiten. Unter dem Einfluß des "kinematischen Fiebers" im Umfeld von Reuleaux entwarf er Mechanismen zur Berechnung mathematischer Lösungen.
